Supplications for Peace with the Law
When finally coming to Jerusalem, the brethren received him gladly, & Sha’ul would eventually meet James once again, with all the elders being present.
& when He had saluted them, he declared particularly what things God had wrought among the gentiles by his ministry.
& when they heard it, they glorified the Lord, & said unto him, thou seests, brother, how many thousands of Jews there are all zealous of the law:
& they are informed of thee, that thou teaches all the Jews which are among the Gentiles to forsake Moses, saying that they ought not to circumcise their children, neither to walk after the customs.
What is it therefore, the Multitude must needs come together: for they will hear that thou art come. - Acts 21:19-22
& so there was conflict with in Jerusalem as to whether or not Sha’ul preaches against the law of Moshe toward those among the Gentiles. By this time, Sha’ul was no longer anonymous, having build a reputation in many regions, through the controversy of his teaching.
This controversy is most usually a result of confusion about the gostpel of grace, & comprehending how it relieves us from bondage of the law. Those of the circumcision would likely have wrestled with this concept being more-so rooted in the traditions of the law. Where as those who be jews among the Gentiles rejoice in not being burdened of a burden. This in part is the root of controversy among other things. That because of these, Sha’ul was accused of everything from turning the world upside down to being a babbler of strange gods.
& so James, Ha-Mashiyachs brother thought to pacify whatever offense that may arise at the pressence of Sha’ul in Jerusalem with discernment over the matter he sough remedy.
“Do therefore this that we say to thee: We have four men which have a vow on them; Them take & purify thyself with them, & be at charges with them, that they may shave their heads: & all may know that those things where of they were informed concerning thee, are nothing; but that thou thyself also walkest orderly, & keepest the law.” - Acts 21:23-24
James did this as a means of intercession, that Sha’ul’s collection may serves as both supplications of peace in the temple & proven agreement with the law.
“For it hath pleased them of Macedonia & Achaia to make a certain contribution for the poor saints which are at Jerusalem.
It hath pleased them verily; & their debtors they are. For if the Gentiles have been made partakes of their spiritual things, their duty is also to minister unto them in carnal things.
When therefore I have performed this, & have sealed to them this fruit, I will come by you into Spain.” -Romans 16:26-28
Then Paul took the men, & the next day purifying himself with them entered into the temple, to signify the accomplishment of the days of purification, until that an offering should be offered for every one of them.
& when the seven days were almost ended, the Jews which were of Asia, when they saw him in the temple, stirred up all the people & laid hands of him, - Acts 21:26-27
