Sha'ul's final moments in Jerusalem
& All the city was moved, & the people ran together: & they took Paul, & drew him out of the temple: & forth with took Paul, & drew him out of the temple: & forth-with the doors were shut.
& as they went about to kill him, tidings came unto the chief captain of the band, that all Jerusalem was in an uproar.
Who immediately took soldiers & centurions, & ran down unto them: & when they saw the chief captain & soldiers, they left beating of Paul. - Acts 21:30-32
Again I see Sha’ul’s faith tried among stony grounds, that his life was held ransom by the people at which the roman soldiers immediately took him bound with chains, seeking a reason for all that was being done.
& some cried one thing, some another, among the multitude: & when he couldn’t know the certainty for the tumult, he commanded him to be carried into the castle. - Acts 21:34
Even in the midst of this madness, it was Shaul’s intention that he should reach out & reason with the people, requesting of the Chief captain that he may speak to the people. In this, the chief was still in confusion to the nature of this situation, asking:
Art not thou that Egyptian, which before mayest an uproar, & leddest out into he wilderness four thousand men that were murderers? - Acts 21:38
But once he would eventually give him license to speak, Sha’ul then took the opportunity to testify in the Hebrew Tongue, telling of the vision he received in Ha-Mashiyach which led him into his works of ministry.
& saw him saying unto me, “ Make haste, get thee quickly out of Jerusalem: for they will not receive thy testimony concerning me.” - Acts 22:18
& they gave him audience unto this word, & then lifted up their voices, & said, away with such a fellow from the earth: for it is not fit that he should live.
& as they cried out, & cast off their clothes, & threw dust into the air,
The chief captain commanded him to be brought into the castle, & bade that he should be examined by scoring; that he might know wherefore they cried so against him.
& as they bound him with thongs, Paul said unto the centurion that stood by, is it lawful for you to scourge a man that is a Roman, & uncondemned? - Acts 22:22-24
At this, the soldiers departed from Sha’ul, no longer intending to investigate him, in fear that they had bound a roman.
But even with ending that strife, he would still face much conflict among the stony grounds of the people. Conflicts with he high priest that would order that he be smitten, conflict with those of contention that would accuse him by the law. & yet even in the midst of all this trouble, his foot was kept from slipping according to his sincerity of spirit.
& there arose a great cry: & the scribes that were of the pharisees part arose, & strove saying, we find no evil in this man: but if a spirit or an angel hath spoken to him, let us not fight against God. - Acts 23:9
& the high priest Ananias commanded them that stood by him to smite him on the mouth.
Then said Paul unto him, God shall smite thee, thou whited wall: for sites thou to judge me after the law, & commandant me to be smitten contrary to the law? - Acts 23:3-2
Then said Paul, I wist not, Brethren, that he was the high priest: for it is written, THOU SHALT NOT SPEAK EVEIL OF THE RULER OF THY PEOPLE. - Acts 23:5
But when Paul perceived that one part were Sadducees, & the other Pharisees, he cried out in the council, men & brethren, I am a Pharisee, the son of a Pharisee: of the hope & resurrection of the dead I am called in question. - Acts 23:6
Although he found grace in sight of the pharisee, this would ultimately be his final visit to Jerusalem, being that he would become a fugitive, fleeing persecution from the people.
& when there arose a great dissension, the chief captain fearing lest Paul should have been pulled in pieces of them, commanded the soldiers to go down, & to take him by force from among them, & to bring him into the castle. - Acts 23:10
& the night following the Lord stood by him, & said, “Be of good cheer, Paul: for as thou hast testified of me in Jerusalem, so much thou bear witness also at Rome.” -Acts 23:11
