Ezekiel 28: Revisiting the King of Ty'rus
Moreover the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,
Son of man, take up a lamentation upon the king of Ty’rus, and say unto him, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Thou sealest up the sum, full of wisdom, and perfect in beauty.
Thou hast been in Eden the garden of God; every precious stone was thy covering, the sardius, topaz, and the diamond, the beryl, the onyx, and the jasper, the sapphire, the emerald, and the carbuncle, and gold: the workmanship of thy tabrets and of thy pipes was prepared in thee in the day that thou wast created.
Thou art the anointed cherub that covereth; and I have set thee so; thou wast upon the holy mountain of God; thou hast walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire.
Thou wast perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created till iniquity was found in thee.
by the multitude of thy merchandise they have filled the midst of thee with violence, and thou hast sinned: therefore I will cast thee as profane out of the mountain of God: and I will destroy thee, O covering cherub, from the midst of the stones of fire.
Thine heart was lifted up because of thy beauty, thou hast corrupted thy wisdom by reason of thy brightness: I will cast thee to the ground, I will lay thee before kings, that they may behold thee.
Thou hast defiled thy sanctuaries by the multtude of thine iniquities, by the iniquity of thy traffick; therefore will I bring forth a fire from the midst of thee, it shall devour thee, and I will bring thee to ashes upon the earth in the sight of all them that behold thee.
All they that know thee among the people shall be astonished at thee: thou shalt be a terror, and never shalt thou be any more. -Ezekiel 28:11-19
So when it comes to the power of prayer, there’s two different concepts that we find associated with the practice. One concept being supplication, & the other is intercession. Let’s talk about supplication.
Supplication is defined as a substance to be obtained. Where as intercession on the other hand is more-so defined as an objective in the verb form associated with prayer.
Remember that supplication has a “noun” connotation. This helps us to see it more-so as a substance associated with prayer, such as the figure of the olive branch that the ancients associate with it. & In the same way that we find faith being the “substance” of things hoped for yet unseen, we find supplication being the “substance” to have with us in the process of prayer, (more specifically humility, godliness, loving intentions). The idea is that we give supplication as a means of seeking things like “peace”, “relief”, or “reconciliation.”
What are some examples of Supplication?
Even when we look at the scripture above, is there anything written in the volume of this chapter that could be considered supplications made for well-being?
The Cherub - Although the cherub could be considered with a noun connotation as something to “have in your favor”, cherubs are more-so considered “ministering spirits”. & so with me, this is more-so in association with intercession as one that intercedes on the behalf of another.
Precious Stones - On the other hand, we have mention a number of different gems, (or “precious stones”) with which the Cherub is said to be covered with. These stones would be more-so considered supplications made for “beauty” or even “wisdom”. This being in precept with the “ornament of grace” spoken of in Proverbs 4 which says:
Forsake her not, and she shall preserve thee: love her, and she shall keep thee.
Wisdom is a principle thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding.
Exalter her, and she shall promote thee: she shall bring thee to honour, when thou dost embrace her.
She shall give to thine head an ornament of grace: a crown of glory shall she deliver thee.
Hear, O my son, and receive my sayings; and the years of thy life shall be many.
I have taught thee in the way of wisdom; I have led thee in right paths.
When thou goest, thy steps shall not be straitened; and when thou runnest, thou shalt not stumble.
Take fast hold of instruction; let her not go: keep her; for she is thy life. -Proverbs 4:6-13
