About Epicureanism
Epicureanism was one Grecian Philosophy that maintains it’s relevance during the time of the New Testament.
It’s the idea that the highest state a person could attain is “ataraxia” (absolute peace) & aporia (complete absence of mental, emotional, & physical distress or need.)
Today, people often associate this with the indulgence of luxury & pleasure, which isn’t necessarily the case. The Epicurean goal would be more-so an advocate for people to relax & enjoy life with out worrying so much, as the gods that exist in a permanent state of ataraxia, so much that they didn’t interfere with the affairs of man.
With Epicureanism, there was a removal of fear in the judgment of the gods, both in life & death. This encouraged the epicurean with a healthy conscience to find fullfillment in life outside of religious rules &/or expectations. Because to the epicurean, ataraxia means everything, from being comfortably fed, but not over-indulged, likewise educated learning with out distress, & the encouragement of emotional intelligence all being core values of this philosophy that welcomes civil society with healthy boundaries.
& So, Epicureanism’s best life to live would consist of sufficient food, comfortable dwelling, peaceful relationships, & good friends. Epicurus’ academy is said to have followed this model; & the school was in his home & garden & included both slaves & women
